Greg Brumitt

Principal

Greg has extensive experience working in both private and public sector markets, developing successful strategic initiatives and the brands and organizations that support them. Greg’s practice focuses on a wide range of quality of life endeavors including; community livability and resiliency, activation and programming, branding and image development and urban and park design for active living. He has a particular interest and has studied how communities can use their  assets to drive active lifestyle cultures and the community vibrancy that it engenders. He has developed a reputation for his ability to synthesize a variety of community assets into quality of life strategies that can create the vibrant atmosphere emerging community’s need for economic growth.

Most recently, Greg worked with the Great Rivers Greenway District is St. Louis, Missouri as its Director of Conservation and Community Service to develop its public-facing operations capabilities that included Communications, Greenway Operations, Conservation, Public Engagement and Special Events.

Greg, an avid cyclist and kayaker founded Dayton, Ohio’s outdoor recreation initiative working with Five Rivers MetroParks in 2005. The initiative sought to build a culture of outdoor lifestyle and transform Dayton’s rust-belt image through the development of an outdoor recreation culture and image. Greg is the co-founder of several outdoor events there, including the Midwest Outdoor Experience, The Adventure Summit, and the Miami Valley Bike Summit, among others.

Today, Dayton is recognized as one of the Midwest’s most bike-friendly cities; featuring a LEED-Certified commuter bike hub that supports the country’s largest regional bikeway network. Dayton recently launch it’s own bike share program called LINK. Greg served on the 5-member steering committee that led the development and implementation of the region’s Comprehensive and Local Regional Bike Plan. In addition, the initiative Greg led developed a 29-mile backpacking trail, The Twin Valley Trail; a mountain biking facility, MoMBA; a whitewater park, The Mad River Run. These efforts have led to other community efforts including a second larger whitewater project downtown and the bike sharing effort called Link Dayton. Brumitt served on the Board of Directors of Bike Miami Valley, the region’s bike advocacy group, The University of Dayton’s Rivers Institute and Ohio’s Great Corridor Association steering committees, and the Greater Downtown Dayton Plan Active Lifestyle Committee. Through the efforts of Greg, his staff and their many community partners, outdoor recreation is now part of Dayton’s culture and regional strategy and is a leading component of the recently implemented Greater Downtown Dayton Plan. Dayton recently received recognition by Outside Magazine as a Best Town 2017 and as the city that represents “The Rebirth of the American Dream.”

After creating Dayton’s outdoor recreation initiative, Greg founded Outdoor Connections at Five Rivers MetroParks. Built on the outdoor initiative that Greg founded, this diverse group expanded its efforts beyond outdoor recreation to advocating for and creating access to a more livable, resilient Dayton. Efforts included outdoor recreation programs, community gardening, sustainable farming and local foods, and nature and conservation interpretation. Greg’s group was also responsible for special events production, along with operations and marketing of Dayton’s downtown Riverfront Park, RiverScape as well as 2nd St Public Market. At 2nd Street Market, Greg established a vendor incubator of sorts by establishing a network of education and access to the resources food entrepreneurs needed to be successful starting their small market-based businesses.

Greg is the former Director of Business Development at the Nantahala Outdoor Center, a world-renowned whitewater outfitter located in the mountains of Western North Carolina. He is the founder of the Asheville Mountain Sports Festival, now in its 15th year of operation and is the former Co-Director of the Bank of America Whitewater Kids Club, a children’s whitewater training program affiliated with the Nantahala Racing Club and US Canoe and Kayak Team.

In addition to his active lifestyle efforts, Greg spent over 20 years leading project management, product marketing and strategic planning groups in several high technology companies, including Emerson Electric, Glenayre Technologies and Adaptive Broadband. Greg has worked in several innovation centers; including Silicon Valley, Asheville, Vancouver, BC and the Dallas Telcom Corridor. Today Greg’s practice is focused on the intersection of community livability and innovation. In other words…how a community’s culture and quality of life can engender or hinder the change, innovation and establishment of the needed ‘vib’ a community needs to thrive in today’s knowledge economy.

Greg now living in his home town of Edwardsville, Il is an active lifestyle advocate; speaking and writing on outdoor culture and its positive affects on communities. He most enjoys helping client communities develop their own livability and active lifestyle efforts. Most recently he spoke on developing outdoor cultures in communities at the International Mountain Bike Association (IMBA) World Summit in Santé Fe, New Mexico and at SIUE’s Local Foods Summit. His latest writing can be found in IMBA’s new book, Bike Parks, IMBA’s Guide to New School Trails, in his Blog, The Culture Factor and in St Louis-based Terrain Magazine. Greg serves as President of The Nature Preserve Foundation Board of Directors, The Dunlap Lake Association Board of Directors, and The Aububon Center at Riverlands advisory committee. Greg is member of the Gateway Off-Road Cyclists, St Louis’s mountain bike advocacy organization and Trailnet, the area’s alternative transportation advocacy group.

Greg graduated Summa Cum Laude from the University of Cincinnati’s College of Design, Architecture, Planning and Art (DAAP) with a degree in Urban Planning.

Andy Williamson

Vice President of Strategic Initiatives

Andy Williamson, Vice President of Strategic Initiatives, brings a wealth of experience, passion, and vision to the Active Strategies team. As a Midwest native and a city boy, Andy found his passion for the great outdoors and adventure via family camping trips and Scouting, which eventually steered him toward dedicating his education and career to protecting our public lands, helping people to develop the skills to be better able to access them, and supporting communities in creating more vibrant and active lifestyles.

Andy studied eco-tourism and natural resource management at Hocking College and completed another degree in Resource, Recreation and Tourism at the University of Idaho. Whether it was managing programs and trips across the country for university and park district outdoor recreation initiatives, coaching local nonprofits and land management agencies on how to create amazing outdoor destinations and urban playgrounds, or as a dedicated volunteer and advocate he has spent the last 15 years working to educate and inspire people to get out and live and has been invested in ensuring everyone has a place to find their own adventure.

During his tenure at Five Rivers MetroParks as their Outdoor Recreation Manager Andy supported numerous regional initiatives, events, and infrastructure projects. Andy is the founder of the Miami Valley Cycling Summit, a biennial regional cycling advocacy event that brings together key stakeholders from across the SW Ohio region to create more bike friendly communities and connections. As an advocate and Vice President of Bike Miami Valley, the regional advocacy organization, Andy co-chaired the development and launch of the Link Dayton Bike Share program and the hiring of the organizations first Executive Director.

Over the past 6 years with the International Mountain Bicycling Association, Andy served as the Great Lakes Region Director supporting communities, agencies, and dozens of non-profit organizations in creating, protecting, and enhancing great places to ride mountain bikes. He played a key role in launching numerous destination quality trail systems, world class urban bike parks, and elevating the profile of mountain biking and trails across the Midwest. Recently as Director of Programs Andy crafted a comprehensive program strategy that established a full progression of products and education tools to better help accelerate the pace of trail development and its impact across the nation. Serving on numerous national coalitions and committees, working with key federal agencies, and engaging with corporate partners and foundations, Andy lived the mission and passionately strove to make sure every person has a quality and enjoyable experience to get out and play on their bicycle.
